Pavers and Hardscaping in Plano, TX

Patios, walls and sod that work with Plano's clay and Plano's water rules

In Plano the questions are the same as anywhere on this clay, plus one the city decides for you: how often you can water. If you're putting in pavers, a retaining wall or new sod, the worry is paying for it and watching it sink, lean or brown out. Call (469) 283-6279 and we'll connect you with a paver and hardscape pro serving Plano. Ask how deep the compacted stone base will go, how water will leave the patio, and whether your wall needs a permit from Plano. If the job includes new grass or plants, ask about Plano's variance for new landscapes before anything is delivered, because the regular schedule allows sprinklers only twice a week.

Plano's watering schedule, and new landscapes

From April 1 through October 31, Plano asks residents to water a maximum of twice a week:

  • Addresses ending in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) water on Monday and Thursday.
  • Addresses ending in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) water on Tuesday and Friday.
  • No sprinklers from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • A hand-held or soaker hose can water foundations and landscaping for up to two hours on any day, and low-flow drip can run as needed.
  • "A variance may be requested to water new landscapes for up to 30 days."

(City of Plano, April 2, 2026.) New sod needs water every day while it roots, so get the variance first. More on sod: Sod Installation.

Paver patio and lawn behind a brick home in Plano, TX

Patios and driveways that stay flat

Plano sits on the same swelling clay as the rest of Collin County. A compacted crushed stone base, at least 4 inches under a patio and more under a driveway, is what keeps pavers from sinking and rocking. Ask for it in writing, along with edging, joint sand, haul-off and grading. Details: Paver Patio Contractor and Paver Driveway Installation.

Do you need a permit for a wall in Plano?

Check with Plano Building Inspections before you build. Nearby, McKinney requires a permit for every retaining wall and engineered plans over 2 feet, and several other North Texas cities draw the line at 4 feet from the bottom of the footing. Whatever the height, the wall needs gravel backfill, a drain pipe and filter fabric behind it. See Retaining Walls and Hardscaping.

Covering the patio or adding a kitchen

Plano's patio cover checklist asks for drawings and a site plan, says total lot coverage can't go over the maximum, and notes that HOA deed restrictions may add requirements. If you're adding a grill under the cover, plan the vent hood with it. See Outdoor Kitchens and Stone Grills.
